The Howard County Commission on Disabilities is now seeking nominations for its 2023 annual awards program. These awards recognize individual achievement and outstanding efforts of those who advance full participation in community life for all residents, while promoting the spirit and intent of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other disability rights laws. The nomination deadline is Monday, August 21, 2023.

Howard County Government offices and more to close Monday, July 3rd and Tuesday, July 4th for the Independence Day holiday. There will be regular Monday curbside trash, recycling, yard trim and food scrap collection on the 3rd; however, there will be no Tuesday collection on the 4th. The County's holiday slide schedule will be in effect for the remainder of the week, with Tuesday collection being picked up on Wednesday, Wednesday on Thursday and so forth. 

One person was found dead in the residence. 

One person was injured and is listed in good condition. 

The suspect is charged with second-degree murder, false imprisonment, and first-degree arson in the March 3 death. 

This March, Howard County’s Office of Emergency Management will hold two public meetings to gather public input and discuss the County’s Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan and Flood Mitigation Plan. The first meeting will take place in-person on Wednesday, March 22nd and the second meeting will take place virtually on Wednesday, March 29th. 

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball and the County’s Department of Housing and Community Development are seeking proposals from community partners for homeownership and neighborhood initiatives, as well as rehabilitation and multifamily rental housing projects, that are eligible for funding from the Housing Opportunities Trust Fund Notice of Funding Availability.

The County’s Department of Public Works’ Bureau of Utilities has begun its annual Fire Hydrant Inspection program, which inspects all 10,111 fire hydrants located throughout the county to ensure they are fully operational. In addition, the County also gearing up for ISO audit, which measures water supply for fire suppression and ability of fire department to serve community.

The suspect is charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, assault, reckless endangerment, and related weapon violations.

The new grant opportunity will promote youth activities and positive engagement

The Howard County Planning Board unanimously approved HoCo By Design, the County’s general plan update and Route 1 Corridor Plan. The vote follows a thorough three-year process which yielded extensive community input and data analysis.
