Howard County Executive Calvin Ball signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for Project SEARCH, a one-year program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their last year of high school. Ball was joined by Arc of Howard County Executive Director Cindy Parr, HCPSS Superintendent Michael J. Martirano, Special Education & Student Services Executive Director Dr. Terrell “Terri” Savage, and Jill Pierce from the Maryland State Department of Education.

A Howard County construction project to conduct test pits and soil borings near 8600 Main Street in Ellicott City is expected to begin on or about Thursday, August 22. The test pits and borings will identify underground utilities for future culvert and storm drain replacement at the site. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed within three business days.

On Thursday, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball will cut the ribbon on the new Howard Community College (HCC) Connector as part of his “Complete Streets” vision for transportation. The event will also feature Ball’s announcement of new “Complete Streets” policy to ensure safe accommodation for all street users, whether walking, biking, taking transit, or driving.

On Wednesday, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball will sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for Project SEARCH, a one-year program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities in their last year of high school. The program helps students gain employment and marketable work skills through an internship with Howard County government.

Howard County Government offices, courts, animal shelter, 50+ centers and the Alpha Ridge Landfill will be closed in observance of the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 2. As there will be no trash, recycling, yard trim or food scrap collection on Labor Day, the County’s holiday "slide” schedule will be in effect. Howard County Executive Calvin Ball announced that the Howard County Department of Finance has received the Investment Certificate of Excellence Award from the Association of Public Treasurers of the United States and Canada (APTUSC). According to the APTUSC, this recognition assures “all the stakeholders in the community you serve, that you are abiding by professional standards established to ensure prudent management of public funds.”

As part of a Howard County construction project to implement complete street improvements, the sidewalk along the north side of White Acre Road between Stevens Forest Road and Basket Ring Road in Columbia will be closed to pedestrians starting on or about Monday, August 19.

The Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services (HCDFRS) held a dedication ceremony for the new Merriweather Fire Station, Fire Station 14, on Monday, August 19, 2019. The ceremony was immediately followed by station tours.

This past May, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball announced the final decision for his “EC Safe and Sound” plan. His decision, Option 3G.7.0., encompasses a wide range of key flood mitigation projects, including the installation of two 10-foot diameter pipes under Maryland Avenue.

The new Downtown Columbia “Live Where You Work” Program, is a public-private partnership that will provide rental subsidies for low- and moderate-income families to live near their workplace in Downtown Columbia.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball signs a memorandum of understanding between the Howard County Economic Development Authority and Born2Global Center, creating a soft-landing zone at the Howard County Innovation Center for qualified South Korean startups.

Howard County has submitted a formal complaint against Purdue Pharma L.P., and other opioid manufacturers, as well as opioid distributors, in the Circuit Court for Howard County for their alleged role in the opioid epidemic. 

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball released the 2019 report, “Response To A Crisis: Opioids in Howard County.” The report from the Howard County Health Department detailed the current statistics on overdoses, the action plan to address the crisis, and stakeholder engagement efforts.

Today, Howard County Executive Calvin Ball announced that the County has been honored with the “Achievement of Excellence in Procurement Award” (AEP) by the National Procurement Institute (NPI) for the 11th consecutive year.

A Howard County construction project to replace a damaged retaining wall approximately 0.4 miles north of 560 River Road in Sykesville is expected to begin on or about Monday, August 19. During the project, the roadway from the south end of River Road to the project site will be closed to thru traffic. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by late September.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball announced that the County has received a grant award of up to $8.1 million from the National Resources Conservation Services (NRCS) to rebuild the portion of New Cut Road that washed away in the May 2018 Ellicott City flood. The County estimates that all work will be completed, and New Cut Road will re-open, between July - September of 2020, weather permitting.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball is seeking applicants, specifically a student with a disability and agency provider who serves individuals (a transitioning student) with disabilities, interested in serving on the Commission for Transitioning Students with Disabilities. The deadline to apply is Friday, September 6, 2019.

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball and the Howard County Housing Commission announced that the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development has awarded $4.5 million in tax credits to three separate developments in Howard County.

Howard County's Department of Planning and Zoning has released a study on the fiscal impact of the Adequate Public Facilities Ordinance (APFO), following a recommendation made by the County's Fiscal Year 2019 Spending Affordability Advisory Committee to conduct a fiscal impact analysis to study the effects of 2018 amendments to APFO.
