Through an annual back-to-school initiative known as H.A.S.T.E. (Helping Arriving Students Through Enforcement), officers will focus on enforcing driver and pedestrian safety in school zones.
Howard County Government Closings for Labor Day Holiday on September 2nd
Howard County Government offices, courts, animal shelter, 50+ centers and the Alpha Ridge Landfill will be closed in observance of the Labor Day holiday on Monday, September 2nd. As there will be no Monday curbside trash, recycling, yard trim or food scrap collection on Labor Day, the County’s holiday "slide” schedule will be in effect for the remainder of the week.

Howard County Issues a Heat Alert in Response to High Temperatures
In response to high temperatures forecast by the National Weather Service, the Howard County Health Department has issued a heat alert for Howard County. The alert has been issued for Wednesday, August 28 from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with high temperatures expected to be in the mid-to-high 90s.

Montgomery Run Road Pond Repair Underway
A Howard County construction project to repair and improve a stormwater management pond south of 8360 Montgomery Run Road in Ellicott City, has begun. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by late August 2025.

Howard County Office of Transportation to Host Public Meeting on Old Scaggsville Road Complete Streets Improvement Project
Howard County Office of Transportation will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, September 10th at 6:00 p.m. at the pavilion at High Ridge Park, located at 10100 Superior Avenue in Laurel, to discuss proposed Complete Streets pedestrian and bicycle improvement plans for Old Scaggsville Road, Pilgrim Avenue and Superior Avenue.

Sheppard Lane Culvert Replacement Project to Begin
A Howard County emergency repair project to replace the culvert under the travel lane of Sheppard Lane between Preakness Circle Lane and MD 108 in Clarksville, is expected to begin on or about Tuesday, September 2nd. While this work is being done, Sheppard Lane will be closed to all traffic between MD 108 and Preakness Circle. Traffic will follow a clearly marked detour using Sheppard Lane to MD 108 to Homewood Road to Sheppard Lane. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by late September 2025.
